About the Workshop

The Department of Applied Sciences at the Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad invites students and researchers to master the intricacies of in vitro animal cell handling.

Cell culture technology is a foundational pillar supporting a vast array of applications across molecular biology, biomedical research, and the pharmaceutical industry. Advanced mastery of these procedures is critical for driving innovation in cancer research, modern drug discovery, virology, and genetic engineering.

Comprehensive Workshop Modules

A carefully curated, point-wise deep dive into standard and advanced in vitro protocols, designed to maximize hands-on proficiency.

Module 1: Lab Foundations

  • Comprehensive overview of a standard Cell Culture Laboratory setup.
  • Understanding the hierarchy of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
  • Navigation and handling of bio-safety cabinets (BSCs).

Module 2: Aseptic & Sterile Protocols

  • Critical techniques for maintaining strict sterility in a working environment.
  • Contamination identification (bacterial, fungal, mycoplasma) and prevention.
  • Essential Do's & Don'ts when operating within the laminar flow.

Module 3: Instrumentation & Media Setup

  • Hands-on introduction to specialized incubators, inverted microscopes, and centrifuges.
  • Step-by-step preparation of complex Culture Mediums.
  • Balancing basal media with necessary sera, antibiotics, and growth supplements.

Module 4: Cell Revival & Management

  • Rapid thawing procedures to maximize cell viability post-cryostorage.
  • Observing cell morphology and adherence metrics of various cell types.
  • Daily maintenance, monitoring pH changes, and routine media replacement.

Module 5: Sub-culturing (Passaging)

  • Mastery of enzymatic dissociation (trypsinization) of adherent cells.
  • Calculating correct splitting ratios for optimal logarithmic growth.
  • Proper centrifugation, pellet resuspension, and re-seeding techniques.

Module 6: Analytics & Cryopreservation

  • Accurate visual estimation of cellular confluency.
  • Utilizing hemocytometers for precise cell counting and viability testing (Trypan Blue).
  • Preparing freezing media (DMSO) and slow-freezing protocols for long-term biobanking.
